An exciting afternoon of youth basketball this past weekend in Neptune, New Jersey at the Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic. Two top 7th grade AAU teams faced off for the championship, Mavericks and Chester Elite. On paper, the two teams were evenly matched, but on the court was different a story.
Early in the game, there was a lot of back and forth action. The Mavericks turned up the intensity when they decided to apply intense full-court pressure. This rattled Chester Elite and lead to numerous turnovers and easy lay-ups for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks young star talent Meyez Port made all the difference down low in the post. He led all scorers with an impressive 23 points and 7 rebounds. His effort and intensity seemed to inspire the rest of his team. Fellow teammate, guard Tyler Chapman added an additional 12 points and 5 assists for the Mavericks.
Chester Elite didn’t go down without a fight. Mid-way through the second half, Chester Elite solidified it’s defense and showed an increased effort on the boards allowing them to go on a run. Unfortunately, they struggled with converting on lay-ups, put-backs and free throws. This ultimately hurt Chester Elite’s chances of ever taking the lead. On this day, Mavericks were the better team and went home with a win. Final score 48-37.
