The A-Game Super Shootout at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim, PA was the place to be on Sunday March 29th. And as the saying goes, the best was saved for last. The South Jersey Jazz coached by former NBA player and current ESPN Analyst Tim Legler defeated Team Melo for the 17u championship. The overtime thriller was the last game of the night and was the perfect way to end an already amazing weekend of hoops.
Both teams came out firing early, trading three point shots on each of the first two possessions. Myles Cale of the South Jersey Jazz showed off his shifty handle and silky smooth jump shot scoring the first 10 points for his team. Joe O’Brian followed with a lay-up with 6:36 left in the half. Score, 12-13 Team Melo.
With Cale on the bench, the Jazz struggled against Team Melo’s aggressive defense. After a steal and slam by Melo’s Darryl Morsell, Coach Legler called a timeout and reinserted Cale back into the game. The score was 14-22, Melo. Soon after Cale reentered the game at 3:01 remaining, the Jazz proceeded to go on an 8-2 run. By halftime, Jazz was within striking distance only down two points, 22-24.
The second-half started off almost identical to the first. Both teams came out hot and ready to play. However, during the final 8 minutes of the half and in overtime, it was a Myles Cale show. He took over the game led his team to victory finishing with a Game high 26 points, including conversions on numerous clutch baskets when his team really needed them.
The balance attack of Montez Mathis (10 points), Darryl Morsell (12 points), and Andre Rufus (14 points) wasn’t enough for Team Melo to overcome Myles Cale and the stout team defense of the SJ Jazz. Final Score 65-62 Jazz in overtime.
